Venice (3 days 2 nights trip, but shorten to 1 day)

Flight & train delayed & cancellation
Our 8 night 7 days Italy trip didn't start smooth, lots of Europe countries hit by snow storm, airport closed or train not running. We lost about 2 days due to flight & train cancellation and delay. We supposed to visit:
> Venice: 19 - 21 Dec
> Florence: 22 Dec
> Pisa: 23 Dec
> Rome: 24 - 26 Dec

But on the 1st day, our flight from London to Venice is cancelled and the next available flight is the 3rd day, that would means we lost the entire Venice time. We then decided to take the next day flight to Milan, from there take train to Venice.

2nd day, took the 9am flight to Milan, this part still smooth. We then bought one way ticket from Milan train station to Venice, after a few hours of waiting, the train kept on delayed and ended up it was cancelled. We have no choice but to take a later train, but I choose the train that pass by Venice mainland instead of those stop at Venice island as I notice most of the train that stop at Venice island are always cancelled. I'm not going to take the risk, I would rather stop at the mainland and take the regional train from mainland to island, it's just a few minutes waiting time and the journey took only 10 minutes.

We finally arrived Venice island by 10+pm, the whole day wasted as well. That leave us only 1 day to visit around the island. Although not enough, but looking at it on the good side, at least we still have a full day there.

Since we'll be here only for 1 and half day (this night, the next full day, and the morning the day after), so we bought the 36 hours boat tickets. The black colour route in the map is where the boat go. Upon arrived the boat pier, we met our friends and led to Hotel Casa KirscH to check-in, left the luggage and took a short rest, then we started to plan our route (as shown in the map in this post). I've marked the visited spot in alphabet sequence.

A. Basilica San Macro
B. Piazza San Marco
C. San Moisè
D. Teatro La Fenice
E. Santa Maria del Giglio
F. San Maurizio
G. Campo Manin
H. Ponte di Rialto
I. Rialto Market
J. Palazzo Ducale

3rd day, We use the book "Venice Step by Step Insight Guide", it has a lot of routes and we picked some, mostly followed, but detour a bit. We started the tour from around 8am (after breakfast provided by the hotel) and it give us enough time to complete the planned routes within one day. Grand canal is not something we would like to miss, so we took the boat from Rialto boat pier to return to hotel. If you're visiting Venice, you shouldn't be missing this.

The only transportation at Venice island is boat, the system is just like the land transport (bus), each boat has their route number. Each route number define which pier it will stop. At each of the pier, there's a board indicating which boat (route no.) will be stopping there. It is simple to follows.

We went back to hotel for a short rest before going for dinner. At night, we took a short walk around to enjoy the night view. Although we lost around 1.5 days, but at least we did manage to pay the visit (hey, it's not flooding, consider it the good wihin the bad).

I read about a tip regarding visiting Venice, the best way to experience Venice is actually to get lost within the island, you'll walk pass a lot of hidden gem there. I'm quite agree with it, but with the routes given by the book, it actually showing a route that looks like you're lost in the city. If without the book, I don't think we'll see that much.

4th day, leaving early morning at 7am for breakfast, then boat to train station and 8+am train to Florence.

Will continue Florence trip in next post.
